The Classic Cruise is about 90 minutes round trip, and the Premium Cruise is about 2 hours. It's roughly 30 minutes of sailing each way to cover the 14 kilometres to Spirit Island, plus your time ashore at the viewpoint. Sailings can occasionally run up to 15 minutes longer to comply with wake regulations, so leave a little buffer in your schedule. Can you walk on Spirit Island?
No. Out of respect for Spirit Island's significance to the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, walking on the island itself isn't permitted. The cruise docks nearby, and a short trail with wooden stairs leads to an overlook where you take in the classic view and photos.
Is Spirit Island actually an island?
Not quite. It's a peninsula connected to the shore by a thin gravel strip for most of the year. In spring and early summer, high meltwater can occasionally raise the lake enough to briefly cut it off and make it a true island.
Why is it called Spirit Island?
The site is sacred to the Stoney Nakoda (Îyârhe Nakoda), who regard the surrounding mountains as representations of their ancestors. The lake itself was known to them as Chaba Imne, meaning "Beaver Lake."

Pricing is dynamic, so it varies by date and how early you book. As a 2026 reference, the Classic Cruise runs around CAD $106 per adult and $69 per child on advance purchase, and the adults-only Premium Cruise around $141 per adult — all before 5% GST. Getting There and Parking
Where does the cruise depart?
From the Maligne Lake boathouse and docks at the end of Maligne Lake Road, about 48 km (roughly a 1-hour drive) from Jasper town.
How do I get to Maligne Lake — is there a bus?
There's no public bus. Most visitors drive, or pre-book a private shuttle or guided day tour. Allow extra time for wildlife "animal jams" and parking. See the getting there and parking section on our homepage for more.
Is there parking, and is it free?
Yes — parking is in free Parks Canada lots near the boathouse. In peak summer the lots can fill by mid-morning, so arrive 30–60 minutes early. From the lots it's a short walk through the trees to the docks.
Do I need a Parks Canada pass?
Yes, separately from your cruise ticket. All adult visitors need a valid Parks Canada pass to be in the national park. A Jasper day pass is roughly $11–12 per adult (youth 17 and under free). The Canada Strong Pass provides free park admission from June 19 to September 7, 2026.

Is there cell service at Maligne Lake?
No reliable cell service or Wi-Fi. Download your e-ticket, map, and directions before leaving Jasper town.
Are there washrooms on the boat?
No. There are washrooms in the parking lot, at the Lake House by the dock, and at Spirit Island near the landing. Go before you board.
Is food available?
No food or drink is served on board, but you can bring your own. At the boathouse you'll find the Lake House Café, the historic Maligne Lake Chalet, and the Waffle Hut.
What should I wear and bring?

Can I bring bear spray, pets, strollers, or a drone?
Bear spray: not permitted on the boats — leave it in your car. Pets: not allowed on board. Strollers: can't come on the boat, but you can leave one at the dock. Drones: prohibited throughout Jasper National Park, with significant fines for breaking the rule.
Suitability and Accessibility
Is the cruise suitable for kids and seniors?
Yes — the Classic Cruise is family-friendly, with a heated enclosed cabin and a mid-trip stop that lets restless kids stretch. There's no minimum age on the Classic (the Premium is adults-only). Life jackets are provided and a safety briefing is given before departure.
Is the cruise wheelchair accessible?
Partially. Pursuit operates a couple of accessible boats that must be reserved in advance by phone. Note that the Spirit Island viewpoint is reached by wooden stairs, so wheelchair and scooter users can disembark onto the pier but may not be able to reach the upper viewing platform.

What wildlife might I see?
Sightings are never guaranteed, but the Maligne Valley is home to moose, black and grizzly bears, deer, elk, mountain goats, and bald eagles, with occasional caribou or wolves. Does the cruise run in bad weather?
Yes — the boats are glass-enclosed and heated, so cruises run rain or shine, and cloudy days can still deliver dramatic views. Heavy rain or low cloud can occasionally obscure the peaks. If Pursuit cancels a sailing for weather, you're offered an alternative date; otherwise tickets are non-refundable.
Can I swim, canoe, or kayak to Spirit Island instead?
You can paddle — it's about 14 km one way and takes roughly half a day each direction, with canoes and kayaks available to rent at the boathouse. Private motorized boats aren't allowed. Swimming isn't advisable: the glacier-fed water averages only a few degrees above freezing, a real hypothermia risk.
How high and how cold is the lake?
Maligne Lake sits at about 1,670 m (5,480 ft) — roughly 600 m higher than Jasper town, which is why it's noticeably cooler on the water. Average water temperature is around 4°C, so swimming isn't recommended.
How long has the cruise operated, and who was Mary Schäffer?
The cruise has carried visitors to Spirit Island for over 60 years. The lake was first mapped by non-Indigenous explorers after Mary Schäffer reached it in 1908, guided by a map drawn by Samson Beaver of the Stoney Nakoda; she returned to survey it in 1911 and named it Maligne. Spirit Island's global fame grew after a photograph of it was displayed in New York's Grand Central Terminal in 1960.
Is Maligne Lake open in 2026 after the wildfire?
Yes. The July 2024 Jasper wildfire spared the Maligne Lake area — the boathouse and lake facilities were untouched, and the cruise operates normally in 2026. However, Maligne Canyon remains closed for the 2026 season for recovery work, so you can't pair the cruise with a canyon walk this year.
