The Drive: Road Conditions and Best Stops
Maligne Lake Road is fully paved (a short final section near an overflow/boat-launch lot may be gravel), two lanes, and winding, climbing through forest with a total elevation gain of around 815 m. It's a mountain road with 60 km/h stretches — drive to conditions, and watch for wildlife.

One important 2026 note: Maligne Canyon — normally the first major stop — is closed for the entire 2026 season for wildfire-recovery and slope-stability work, so don't plan a canyon walk this year. Parking at Maligne Lake
Good news: parking is free in the Parks Canada day-use lots at the end of the road (you still need a valid park pass to be in Jasper National Park). Follow the parking signs to the free lots, then take the walkway through the forest to the lake, ticket office, boathouse, and chalet.
The closest lot to the cruise ticket office and boathouse is the first one you reach. If it's full, a second large lot sits across the Maligne River bridge — a 5–10 minute walk to the docks. There are additional overflow and trailhead lots at the north end. The lots are wheelchair accessible and have washrooms.
How busy does it get? In peak summer (July–August) and on weekends, the lots fill through the morning. This is the single best reason to follow Pursuit's advice and arrive at least 60 minutes before your cruise — earlier on weekends. There's no gas station on Maligne Lake Road — fill up in Jasper before you leave. Two stations operate in town (a Petro-Canada at the east end of Connaught Drive and a Shell downtown), and both get busy on summer mornings, so top up mid-day if you can. At the lake there are seasonal food options — the Lake House Café, the Waffle Hut, and the Maligne Lake Chalet — open roughly late May to early October. Pickups are from downtown Jasper (the Two Brothers Totem Pole on Connaught Drive), Whistlers Campground, and select hotels, with drop-off at the lakefront near the cruise terminal. Maligne Lake Road is open, assessed, and safe to drive, and Maligne Lake itself is fully open with the cruise operating normally. You'll pass visible burn scars in places along the corridor — blackened and fallen pine with new growth coming up — and in some spots the fallen trees have actually opened up views.
