Maligne Lake sits at the end of Maligne Lake Road, roughly 48 kilometres — about an hour's drive — southeast of the Jasper townsite. Is Maligne Lake Open After the 2024 Wildfire?
Many visitors planning a 2026 Jasper trip ask this directly, so it's worth a clear answer. In July 2024, wildfire swept through parts of Jasper National Park. Maligne Lake, the boathouse, and the Spirit Island area came through undamaged. The cruise ran a full 2025 season and is operating normally in 2026. Maligne Lake Road passes through healthy forest close to the lake.
Two things that are not back for 2026: Maligne Canyon (the famous slot canyon about halfway up the access road) remains closed for wildfire-damage rehabilitation, and Cavell Road is also still shut. If your plans extend beyond the lake cruise, check the Parks Canada closure map before traveling. The lake and the view you came for are very much open.
